Add language descriptions to Glottolog!

If you work in language description and you want people to know about your work, a great way to increase visibility is to make a contribution to Glottolog.org. That's the first place many people go to to check out what's been done on a particular language. Glottolog catalogues language description, but it's not exhaustive. Glottolog aims to minimally include the most extensive description per language (i.e. for example a full grammar if available). If your work is currently not indexed in Glottolog, it is probably not an intentional oversight - the reference just hasn't reached the editing team yet. You can change that! https://glottolog.org/meta/contact

You can also contribute to Glottolog if you don't work in language description, if you just noticed some missing references that sure is welcome too.

In the background, all references in Glottolog are formatted in bibTeX style. This is a popular format for reference mangement, besides being a part of the TeX-university - bibTeX formatted references can also be read in and exported from Zenodo and Mendeley reference managers. bibTeX-formatting is not listed as a necessity for Glottolog contribution, but I think it'll make the editors life much easier so if it's possible - please consider it. If you already store references in a reference manager, you can easily export in bibTeX.

However, don't let not knowing bibTeX stop you, you can also send in references in other formats!

Below is an example of an APA formatted reference rendered in bibTeX, with Glottolog specific fields for lgcode (language that the description is about), lgcode (language that the description is in) and hhtype (grammar;grammar_sketch;wordlist;text;specific_feature;comparative;overview;dialectology;socling;ethnographic;new_testament;minimal;unknown).

A Global Tree of Languages

I was a reviewer for the Evolution of Language (Evolang) conference for the first time this year, a tedious-sounding task that turned out to be hilarious.  The conference attracts some bizarre manuscripts on the origins of language, one particularly imaginative one I wanted to devote a blogpost to, but regretfully cannot because of reviewer confidentiality. Also in my inbox to review was the most exciting paper about language that I’d ever seen.  I recommended acceptance obviously, even though it was only tangentially related to the theme of the conference, and it was accepted as a poster and published in the conference proceedings (available here ).  The paper was by Gerhard Jäger and Søren Wichmann, about constructing a world family tree of languages using a database of basic vocabulary, the ASJP database .  Claims about how language families may be related are nothing new but are normally statistically uninformed (such as work by Merritt Ruhlen and Joseph Gr...

Language family maps

Last week, I assigned Bernhard Comrie's (2017) chapter 'The Languages of the World' (from The Handbook of Linguistics, 2017) to a class. It's a basic overview of the world's language families, which is what I wanted them to read, but for one thing: there are no maps in it. I overcompensated in class by presenting a 30-item list of maps, because some things are just so much easier to understand using visual representations. I decided to post some of the best ones I could find here, for future reference and in order to invite you to post better ones in the comments.
